Cryptococcus neoformans strains classically have been grouped into two varieties that
included five serotypes known as C. neoformans variety neoformans (serotypes A, D, and
AD) and C. neoformans variety gattii (serotypes B and C). The serotype differences between
the different varieties reflect antigenic differences resulting from differences in the structure
of the capsular polysaccharide. The serotype classification of a strain is determined using
