The term hepatic fibrogenesis is used to describe the progression of an incipient fibrotic
lesion to full-blown cirrhosis. The most remarkable feature of hepatic fibrogenesis is that it is
a multifaceted process in which the accumulation of extracellular matrix proteins, tissue
contraction, and even blood-flow derangement are prominent. Discoveries during the past 2
decades have begun to clarify mechanisms of fibrogenesis and have thereby indicated
